Last week my husband and I took my 12 year old son and his friend to the Police concert. I like the Police and listening to their music certainly congers up happy memories of college and my young adulthood. My son loves music, itunes and his ipod. Like a lot of kids, he has a tendency to listen over and over again to what is fashionable to his peers at the time. (he is going through a big Weird Al jag right now). But to his credit, he is always willing to try out some “old” music and certainly eager to go to a live concert. He is a very enthusiastic concert goer, he claps and jumps around, tries to sing the songs and is becoming a proficient people watcher. Together, Henry and I have enjoyed a Bob Marley Birthday tribute (with whats left of the Wailers and Peter Tosh’s band) and a summer music festival featuring Black Eye Peas. This time Dad joined us, reluctantly. (Punk not Pop is his genre) While I think he enjoyed the concert through Henry, that wasn’t the point, he was providing transportation.
It was a beautiful summer night and we were in a huge outside venue that is a classic 80,000 seat futbol stadium. We went to the Sunday night show so the streets we mellow. Parking and getting to our seats was non-eventful. So was the concert. These guys have this down to a science. On at 9:30, break at 10:30. Finish second set at 11:10. Last encore at 11:30. They needed to get back to the hotel to
party sleep. First let me say that Sting’s voice is as good if not better than ever. He is the only one singing in a meaningful way for the entire 2 hours. He looks like he is in good shape and has aged the best of the bunch, probably with a little help. The other two however look old……………Andy Summer (guitarist) looks and is the oldest by nine years. It is ill advised for him to be wearing a dress shirt basically unbuttoned. Steward Copeland is the same age as Sting more or less but looks a lot older with a mop of grey hair and his Olivia Newton John inspired headband. He is actually pretty impressive to watch. Talk about a cardio workout, but he needs to work on keeping his tongue in his mouth.
But I was most awed by how old Henry was. Hanging with his friend, jamming to the music, sharing observations about the scene. This might as well be a beer in his hand.
